Why This Happens

A crash, hung process, or background preview app has locked the file handle. The OS file lock persists even after the original program is closed, preventing any access.

How We Fix It

We read the raw bytes, ignoring OS file locks, and produce a brand-new unlocked PDF file that isn't tied to any process handle.

😫

The Problem

Windows or Mac says your PDF is 'in use by another program' and won't let you open, move, or delete it — even when no program seems to be using it.

The Solution

Get a clean, unlocked copy of your PDF that you can open, edit, and save anywhere without the file-lock error.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I unlock a PDF stuck on my computer?

Our tool reads the file content directly without relying on the OS file handle. Upload the locked file (select via file picker instead of drag-drop to avoid OS lock) and download a fresh unlocked copy.

What causes phantom file locks?

Adobe Acrobat, browser PDF previewers, Dropbox/Google Drive sync apps, and antivirus scanners can all leave residual file locks after crashes. Restarting usually clears them, but our tool provides an instant workaround.
